Part of January's gardening advice: pruning an apple tree

This months gardening tasks include...


Hoe borders regularly to keep down weeds.


Prune long side shoots on Wisteria back to around 20cm.


Deadhead Roses and summer bedding to prolong flowering.


Remove suckers from roses.


Deadhead Delphiniums and Lupins to encourage second flush.


Prune Philadelphus after flowering, removing stems carrying old flowers. Cut out very weak stems and some of the oldest wood.


Pick dead flowers off Rhododendrons.


Deadhead Roses to encourage more flowers.


Cut back Ceanothus, Weigela, Escallonia and Kerria where necessary to control growth.


Be vigilant for signs of Lily Beetle, Vine Weevil, Solomon's Seal Sawfly and other problem pests.


Take cuttings from shrubs.


Prune out plain green shoots from variegated trees and shrubs.


Thin heavy crops of Apples, Pears and Plums.


Tie in new Raspberry canes to support wires.


Cover brassicas with fine netting to prevent cabbage white butterflies laying their eggs on the leaves.
